Death Toll Rises to 132 in Rio's Deadliest Police Raids on Drug Gangs

Escalating Violence in Favelas Sparks Accusations of Executions

Naffah

Brazilian authorities reported a sharp increase in fatalities from large-scale police operations targeting drug gangs in Rio de Janeiro's northern favelas.

The Rio state public defender's office announced 132 deaths, while state police cited 119.

Residents laid out dozens of bodies in the streets of the Penha Complex, with some covered in blood-stained shrouds.

Four police officers were killed during the raids involving 2,500 officers against the Comando Vermelho gang.

The military-style raids targeted the Penha Complex and Alemao Complex, deploying armored vehicles, helicopters, and drones.

Authorities described confronting "narcoterrorism," with suspects using buses as barricades and drones for explosive attacks.

Heavy gunfire led to fires in the neighborhoods.

State police reported 60 criminals killed in the fighting.

Governor Claudio Castro initially estimated around 60 deaths from Tuesday's violence but noted the count would rise as bodies arrived at the morgue.

Allegations and Response

Residents accused police of execution-style killings, with some victims shot in the back or head, bearing burn marks, or tied up.

"The state came to massacre, it wasn't a [police] operation. They came directly to kill, to take lives," one unnamed woman told AFP.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed horror and urged swift investigations.

A federal delegation will meet with Governor Castro on Wednesday.

The Rio state legislature's Human Rights Commission demanded explanations for the operation's lethality.

Last year, nearly 700 died in Rio police actions.
