Pakistan Launches Deadly Air Strikes on Afghanistan as Tensions Escalate

Kabul reports civilian deaths as Islamabad says strikes killed 22 militants in Afghan hideouts

Naffah

Pakistan carried out air strikes in Afghanistan targeting what Islamabad described as militant camps and hideouts, while Afghanistan’s Taliban government said nine civilians, including women and children, were killed.

Pakistan’s Information Ministry said the strikes killed 22 fighters, while Afghan officials said 11 people were also wounded in attacks on homes in Kunar and Helmand provinces.

Neither side’s account has been independently verified.

Conflicting Accounts

Afghan Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the strikes occurred late Wednesday and destroyed three houses in northeastern Kunar and southern Helmand.

“We condemn this act and consider it an aggression and crime against all accepted principles,” Mujahid said.

Pakistan said the operation was based on “credible intelligence” and targeted the Pakistan Taliban, known as the TTP, and the Balochistan Liberation Army.

Its Information Ministry said weapons and ammunition stored at the locations were also destroyed and that precautions were taken to prevent civilian casualties.

An eyewitness in Garmsir told the BBC that strikes began at about 03:30 local time and lasted approximately 30 minutes.

He said residents fled with their children after explosions and that a neighbouring home was hit.

Renewed Escalation

The strikes mark a further escalation between Pakistan and Afghanistan following months of cross-border tensions and a period of relative calm.

Islamabad has repeatedly accused Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities of harbouring armed groups responsible for attacks inside Pakistan.

Kabul denies the allegation and says Pakistani strikes have hit civilian homes.

Fighting intensified sharply in February, before China-mediated talks produced a fragile ceasefire in March.

Last month, an attack on a police facility in northwestern Pakistan killed 24 people and was blamed by provincial police on the Pakistani Taliban.

Pakistan also carried out strikes in Afghanistan last week, including in Kandahar.

Afghan Taliban authorities said those attacks killed four civilians.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan said last week that it had documented more than 1,100 civilian casualties from cross-border violence in Afghanistan so far this year.
