‘I Saw Death’: Gaza Parents Risk Being Killed to Feed Starved Children

Palestinian parents face deadly risks to secure food amid Israel’s blockade

Israel’s ongoing blockade and genocide in Gaza have pushed Palestinian parents to risk their lives daily to secure food for their starving children.

The deliberate restriction of humanitarian aid has created a dire crisis, with only 84 aid trucks entering Gaza daily since July 27, far below the 600 needed to meet basic needs.

This orchestrated scarcity has left families desperate, forcing parents to brave gunfire and bombardments to obtain essentials like flour and beans.

The starvation crisis, worsened by Israel’s policies, has led to catastrophic conditions, particularly for children, who are increasingly malnourished and vulnerable.

Desperate Journeys for Survival

Palestinian parents, like Zainab Dakka, navigate a perilous landscape to feed their families, facing relentless dangers in their desperate quest for basic necessities.

Zainab, a 32-year-old mother of four, described the harrowing journey she undertakes to secure food: “There was shooting and death, until I secured some flour, thank God.”

Her words capture the life-or-death stakes of each trip to aid distribution points like Zikim, where Israeli forces have militarized access, turning it into a deadly gauntlet. She said:

I saw death to bring some flour for my children. Every day, they sleep while they are hungry. They want something good to eat.

The Netzarim Corridor, a militarized zone controlled by Israeli forces, has become a deadly gauntlet for those seeking aid.

At least 20 aid seekers were killed in Israeli attacks across Gaza since dawn on Monday, with paramedics recovering bodies and treating the wounded under constant threat.

The blockade has choked off vital supplies, leaving hospitals like al-Shifa unable to provide adequate nutrition or care.

Children, already weakened by hunger, face irreversible damage, with the UN warning of a worsening hunger crisis in Gaza City and the north.

Children Bear the Brunt of Starvation

Israel’s restrictions have hit Gaza’s most vulnerable hardest, particularly children with pre-existing conditions.

At a school-turned-shelter, Samah Matar watches her sons, Yousef and Amir, waste away due to the lack of specialized food for their cerebral palsy.

Their weights have plummeted, with Yousef dropping from 14kg to 9kg and Amir from 9kg to less than 6kg.

The blockade has also fueled a rise in diseases like Guillain-Barre Syndrome, claiming the lives of two children under 15 due to unavailable treatments.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health warns of an impending “infectious disaster” as malnutrition and infections surge.

A Humanitarian Catastrophe

The war’s toll is staggering, with 60,933 Palestinians killed and 150,027 wounded since its onset, including 9,440 deaths since Israel broke a ceasefire in March.

Aid agencies report an “irreversible humanitarian collapse” unless hostilities cease immediately.

Save the Children’s Ahmad Alhendawi describes a “catastrophic, apocalyptic reality” for Gaza’s children, who fear death from bombings or starvation.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry has urged the UN Security Council to enforce a ceasefire and break Israel’s siege, warning that delays only deepen the crisis.

As parents risk death for a handful of flour, Gaza’s plight remains a stark indictment of Israel’s policies.
