Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated he is prepared to meet U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio face-to-face.

In an interview with RIA Novosti published on Sunday, Lavrov highlighted ongoing telephone communication.

He stressed the importance of discussing the Ukrainian issue and advancing bilateral agenda.

Lavrov insisted that any talks must account for Moscow's interests.

The remarks follow the cancellation of a planned summit between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Budapest.

That meeting was scrapped after indications Moscow would not concede on its Ukraine demands.

Lavrov's Role Affirmed

The Kremlin on Friday rejected media speculation that Lavrov had lost favor with Putin due to stalled U.S. discussions.

Lavrov referenced understandings from the August 15 Putin-Trump summit in Anchorage, Alaska.

Those were based on Putin's June 2024 demands, including Ukraine renouncing NATO aspirations and withdrawing from four claimed provinces: Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia.

He noted U.S. assurances at the time that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would not hinder peace efforts, but difficulties have emerged.

Lavrov accused Brussels and London of pushing Washington toward military pressure on Russia instead of diplomacy.

Russia continues its invasion, controlling about 19% of Ukraine, including annexed Crimea and most of Luhansk.

Lavrov said Moscow awaits U.S. confirmation that Anchorage agreements remain valid.

He warned against using frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine, promising retaliation.

On arms control, Lavrov mentioned U.S. review of extending New START treaty limits beyond February 2026.

Lavrov has not appeared publicly since October 28.
