Trump Says U.S. Navy Acting ‘Like Pirates’ in Iran Blockade

Escalating tensions grow as U.S. seizes vessel and Iran warns of renewed war

Naffah

U.S. President Donald Trump said the U.S. Navy is operating “like pirates” as it enforces a blockade on Iranian ports and the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting a recent seizure of an Iranian vessel and its cargo.

Speaking at an event in Florida, Trump described the operation as economically beneficial, stating that U.S. forces had taken control of a ship, its cargo, and oil amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran.

The remarks come as negotiations to end the conflict that began in late February remain unresolved, with both sides signaling growing frustration and uncertainty.

Rising Tensions

The blockade follows a fragile ceasefire that took effect on April 8 but was quickly overshadowed by renewed U.S. measures imposed days later targeting Iranian ports and maritime activity.

Iran had earlier blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route, after retaliating against U.S. and Israeli strikes launched on February 28.

Trump said he was dissatisfied with Iran’s latest peace proposal and warned that military action could resume if talks fail, reinforcing concerns about further escalation.

In Tehran, officials have indicated that a return to war is increasingly likely, citing what they describe as a lack of U.S. commitment to de-escalation efforts.

War of Words

Iranian officials have sharply criticized U.S. actions, framing them as aggressive and politically motivated amid ongoing diplomatic efforts mediated by Pakistan.

A senior Iranian military figure said recent U.S. statements and actions were aimed at influencing global oil markets and deflecting from strategic challenges.

Iran’s foreign ministry has also called for accountability, describing the conflict as an unprovoked act and urging scrutiny of U.S. policy decisions.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Treasury has warned shipping companies of potential sanctions if they engage with Iranian authorities to secure passage through contested waters.

The developments underscore a widening divide between the two nations as diplomatic channels struggle to produce a lasting resolution.
