Uganda international David Owori, captain of record Ugandan league champions SC Villa, has died after being assaulted in the capital, Kampala, according to police.
The footballer was critically injured after being attacked by unidentified assailants near his home before later dying in hospital.
His death has prompted an outpouring of grief across Uganda's football community and renewed public concern over violent crime in the city.
The killing comes only weeks after the death of Uganda rugby international Sydney Gongodyo, who was fatally assaulted in Kampala.
Police said Owori was attacked on Tuesday in the Kampala suburb of Makindye after resisting an attempt to steal his mobile phone and other belongings.
Witnesses said a group of attackers assaulted him before taking his possessions and fleeing, leaving him unconscious.
Passers-by took him to a nearby medical facility before he was transferred to another hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala said detectives were pursuing leads to identify those responsible.
She added that the scene had been documented and processed to preserve evidence as the investigation continued.
SC Villa spokesperson Asan Kasingye said the player had been ambushed just outside his home and suffered life-threatening injuries.
Tributes continued from football officials, teammates and public figures following Owori's death.
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations said, "David was not just a footballer. He was both a leader and an inspiration to a generation."
SC Villa said, "We have lost more than a player - we have lost a leader, brother and friend."
Parliament observed a minute's silence in his honour while politicians called for a swift investigation and stronger measures to address security concerns.
Many Ugandans also expressed anger over violent crime in Kampala, with Owori's death intensifying calls for authorities to improve public safety.
The National Council of Sports Uganda said recent tragedies affecting the country's athletes underscored the need for justice and lasting solutions.
Owori had returned to SC Villa in 2023 and helped the club secure its first league title in 20 years, lifting a record-extending 17th championship as captain before extending his contract until January 2027.
