Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Male on Friday for a two-day visit to bolster India’s development partnership with the Maldives, a strategically vital Indian Ocean nation.
The visit, the first by a foreign leader since President Mohamed Muizzu assumed office in 2023, underscores India’s commitment to its Neighbourhood First policy and Ocean Vision, despite earlier tensions when Muizzu pledged to shift away from an “India first” stance.
India’s steady diplomatic efforts have helped mend ties, with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri noting the importance of high-level attention in stabilizing relations.
India has played a critical role in supporting the Maldives’ $7.5 billion economy, particularly by aiding its recovery from debt challenges and post-Covid tourism struggles.
During the visit, Modi is expected to extend a $565 million line of credit and initiate formal talks on a Free Trade Agreement, further deepening economic ties.
He will also remotely inaugurate the expansion of Hanimadhoo International Airport, a project financed by India, highlighting its investment in Maldivian infrastructure.
Modi’s visit coincides with the Maldives’ 60th independence anniversary, where he will serve as the Guest of Honour, marking six decades of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
The leaders released postage stamps featuring traditional boats, symbolizing their shared cultural heritage.
President Muizzu emphasized enhanced cooperation, noting progress on projects like the Greater Male Connectivity initiative and India’s support for 4,000 housing units to address local needs.
