Federal agents shot a person in south Minneapolis on Saturday, prompting an investigation by city officials and renewed condemnation from Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as tensions surrounding federal immigration enforcement operations in the state continued to escalate.
Authorities said the shooting occurred near the intersection of West 26th Street and Nicollet Avenue, an area where federal officers and protesters later converged as law enforcement activity expanded and public concern grew.
Minneapolis officials said they were aware of reports involving a possible shooting by a federal law enforcement agent and were working to confirm additional information.
The city urged residents to remain calm and avoid the immediate area as multiple intersections were blocked to traffic.
Video footage posted on social media and verified by national media showed a chaotic scene, with masked federal immigration officers present and protesters beginning to gather nearby.
Law enforcement officers deployed tear gas and pepper bombs as the situation evolved.
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security said the individual who was shot had a firearm and two magazines, adding that the situation was still developing.
Governor Walz said he spoke with the White House following the shooting and sharply criticized the ongoing federal operation in Minnesota.
"I just spoke with the White House after another horrific shooting by federal agents this morning," Walz wrote on social media.
He called for the immediate withdrawal of federal officers, describing the situation as unacceptable.
City officials reiterated calls for public calm while emphasizing that details remained under review.
The shooting follows a fatal incident less than three weeks earlier, when Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis.
Officials and residents have increasingly raised concerns as federal enforcement actions continue, with Saturday’s events marking a further escalation in an already volatile environment.
Investigations into the shooting are ongoing, and no additional official details had been released by late Saturday.
