A mass shooting in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on Friday night has resulted in the deaths of three teenagers and left at least 15 others injured. Police reported that Tomas Rivas, 20, was arrested along with two 17-year-old boys, one on Saturday and another on Sunday. All three face charges of three counts of open murder, with additional charges expected.
The victims have been identified as Andrew Madrid, 16; Jason Gomez, 18; and Dominick Estrada, 19. The injured range in age from 16 to 36, with nine males and six females among them. Emergency services arrived at Young Park shortly after 10 p.m. during an unauthorized car show that drew around 200 attendees. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as gunfire erupted following an altercation between two groups.
Police Chief Jeremy Story indicated that 50 to 60 shell casings were found at the scene, suggesting multiple shooters were involved. The park remains closed as the investigation, assisted by state and federal agencies, continues. Authorities are seeking video evidence and tips from anyone present during the incident.
Local leaders, including Mayor Eric Enriquez, have expressed their sorrow and called for community support. A fundraiser has been established by the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico to aid victims and their families. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham also condemned the violence, highlighting the urgent need for effective public safety measures amidst rising gun violence in the state.
