State Department Begins Significant Layoffs

The U.S. State Department started issuing termination notices to over 1,350 employees on Friday.

This includes 1,107 civil service and 246 foreign service officers based in the U.S.

The layoffs are part of a broader effort to align with President Donald Trump’s “America First” agenda.

An internal notice stated, “The Department is streamlining domestic operations to focus on diplomatic priorities.”

Nearly 3,000 total staff reductions, including voluntary departures, will impact the 18,000-strong U.S.-based workforce.

The process moved forward after the U.S. Supreme Court lifted a prior injunction this week.

Concerns Mount Over Diplomatic Capacity

Critics, including Democratic senators, warn that the cuts threaten U.S. national security.

Global crises, such as Russia’s war in Ukraine and Middle East tensions, demand robust diplomacy.

Senator Tim Kaine said, “This is one of the most ridiculous decisions that could possibly be made.”

The American Foreign Service Association criticized the move, citing weakened global influence.

Some reported logistical challenges, with internal systems struggling to process terminations efficiently.

Emotional Scenes Unfold at Headquarters

At the State Department’s Washington headquarters, employees held an emotional “clap-out” for colleagues.

Many were seen carrying boxes, visibly moved as they bid farewell to coworkers.

Supporters outside cheered, holding banners that read, “Thank you America’s diplomats.”

“Transition Day Out Processing” offices facilitated the return of badges and equipment.

A five-page “separation checklist” guided affected employees through the process.

A senior official emphasized handling layoffs with dignity, yet morale remains notably low.
