Britain has announced the deployment of Royal Air Force specialists to assist Belgium in countering drone incursions that disrupted flights at Brussels and Liège airports last Thursday.

Unidentified drones were also reported near military bases and nuclear facilities in Belgium.

The move follows a direct request from Belgian authorities, with Russia alleged by some officials as the most likely perpetrator.

Sir Richard Knighton, the UK's chief of defence staff, confirmed that British personnel and equipment from the RAF's dedicated counter-uncrewed aerial systems unit would be provided.

He stated that the origin of the drones remains unknown but expressed readiness to support a Nato ally.

Germany and France have already sent specialist assistance, underscoring a coordinated European response to the incidents that affected thousands of passengers and imposed significant costs on airlines.

Broader Security Concerns

The disruptions are part of a series of drone sightings across northern Europe this autumn, including in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Germany.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius suggested a possible connection to discussions on using frozen Russian assets held in Belgium to fund a €140bn loan for Ukraine.

Knighton described Russia as the most pressing threat, emphasizing the need to bolster defenses against hybrid warfare tactics such as sabotage and cyber operations.
