Denmark is grappling with a series of unidentified drone sightings over its military installations, with the latest incidents reported overnight Friday into Saturday.
The Danish defense ministry confirmed that drones were observed at several defense facilities, including the Karup Air Base, the country’s largest military hub.
These sightings follow a week of similar incidents that temporarily shut down multiple Danish airports, heightening national security concerns.
Authorities have labeled these incursions as hybrid attacks, with suspicions pointing toward foreign involvement, though no concrete evidence has been disclosed.
The Danish Armed Forces deployed several capabilities to address the drone activity but refrained from specifying locations or details, citing operational security.
Local police, in coordination with the military, are investigating the sightings, particularly around Karup, where one or two drones were spotted around 7:15 p.m. Friday.
Simon Skelkjaer, duty manager at the Central and West Jutland Police, noted the drones were seen both inside and outside the base’s perimeter.
The Midtjylland civilian airport, which shares runways with Karup, was briefly closed, though no flights were impacted due to the timing.
Denmark has accepted Sweden’s offer of anti-drone technology to bolster security ahead of an upcoming EU summit in Copenhagen.
The drone incidents are not isolated to Denmark, as neighboring Germany and Norway reported similar sightings near their military bases.
In Germany, Schleswig-Holstein’s interior minister announced enhanced drone defense measures, while Norway investigated possible drone activity near its Oerland air force base.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described the incidents as “the most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure to date,” hinting at possible Russian involvement, which Moscow has denied.
The repeated airspace violations have prompted EU defense ministers to prioritize a “drone wall” to counter such threats, reflecting growing regional anxieties about hybrid warfare and infrastructure security.
