India-Pakistan Tensions Rise, as India Takes Wave of Diplomatic Measures

India has announced that it is suspending the 1960 Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan, and has called on Pakistani diplomats to leave the High Commission in New Delhi, in a wave of diplomatic measures aimed against its neighbour Pakistan. Additionally, India announced the closing of several border crossings between the two countries, including the ceremonial Attari-Waghari crossing.

India also announced it would withdraw the majority of its diplomatic staff from India's High Commission in Islamabad, including defense envoys. All Pakistani nationals currently in India with an SAARC visa have been instructed to leave the country within 48 hours.

The wave diplomatic decisions came after the conclusion of a meeting between Prime Minister Narenda Modi and the Indian security cabinet, following a militant attack on tourists in the Indian-occupied portion of Kashmir, in the popular town of Pahalgam, near the major city of Srinagar.

India has accused what it calls 'Pakistani-backed terrorists' of committing the massacre against civilians, which left at least 25 people dead. Pakistan denies any involvement in the attack, and has expressed condolances to the victims' families. The perpetrators have not yet been found, but India promised to bring them to 'swift justice'.

Kashmir has been a disputed region between India and Pakistan for decades, with India controlling one part and Pakistan controlling another part of the large mountaneous region. India has long been accused of oppressing the majority Muslim population of Kashmir, and seperatist or pro-Pakistani militant movements have emerged throughout the years, waging an armed insurgency against the Indian government.
