Hamas Delegation Heads to Cairo to Discuss Gaza Ceasefire Progress
A senior Hamas delegation arrived in Cairo on Saturday to discuss the implementation of a fragile Gaza ceasefire with Egyptian mediators, according to two Hamas officials. The talks aim to assess compliance with the current truce and outline steps for a potential second phase of the deal, which could involve further hostage releases and extended calm.
Meanwhile, Hamas released a video on its Telegram channel showing Israeli soldier Matan Angrest, who has been held captive for 511 days. In the footage, reportedly filmed last week, Angrest pleads for his release through a prisoner exchange deal and urges Israeli leaders, U.S. President Donald Trump, and military officials to act. “The only way to bring us back is through the exchange deal and moving to the second stage,” he says.
The truce, which paused Israel’s military offensive, remains precarious, with both sides accusing each other of violations. Hamas seeks guarantees for a permanent ceasefire and Israeli troop withdrawal, while Israel demands the return of all hostages and the dismantling of Hamas’s governance in Gaza.
International mediators, including Egypt and Qatar, are working to bridge gaps, but progress has been slow. The talks in Cairo will test whether the fragile calm can evolve into a lasting resolution or collapse into renewed violence.
