Israeli Drone Strike Hits Gaza Aid Ship in International Waters Near Malta
A ship carrying humanitarian aid and activists to Gaza was struck by drones in international waters near Malta early Friday, according to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), an international NGO campaigning to end Israel’s blockade of Gaza.
The attack, which occurred 17 nautical miles east of Malta, targeted the ship’s generator, igniting a fire and causing a substantial hull breach that left the vessel at risk of sinking.
Details of the Attack
The FFC reported that the ship, carrying 30 people from 21 countries, including prominent figures, issued an SOS distress signal following the attack.
The NGO stated in a social media post:
The drone attack appears to have specifically targeted the ship’s generator, and the vessel is now at risk of sinking with 30 international human rights activists on board.

The crew was left without power or communications.
Video footage uploaded by the FFC showed a fire on the vessel, though the group did not specify who was responsible.
Response and Rescue Efforts
Southern Cyprus dispatched a vessel to assist, but the FFC noted it was “not providing the critical electrical support needed.”
The Maltese government confirmed that a nearby tug arrived by 1:28 a.m., controlling the fire, and an Armed Forces of Malta patrol vessel was sent to provide further aid.
“By 2:13 a.m., all crew were confirmed safe but refused to board the tug,” Malta’s statement said.
The ship, carrying 12 crew members and four civilian passengers, remains outside territorial waters under monitoring.
Context and Calls for Action
The attack follows a severe blockade halting all aid to Gaza for two months, exacerbating a food crisis affecting 91% of its population, according to Munir al-Bursh, Director General of the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
“Israeli ambassadors must be summoned and answer to violations of international law,” the FFC demanded, urging Malta to ensure the safety of those on board.
