On Sunday, the first day of Eid al-Fitr, Israeli airstrikes hit several areas in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least nine Palestinians, including five children, and leaving many others injured, as reported by Palestinian officials. The strikes targeted places like a tent where displaced families were seeking refuge in Khan Yunis and a home in Jabalia, worsening the already dire humanitarian situation in the enclave.
Medical sources say that the conflict has resulted in 50,277 deaths and 114,095 injuries since October 2023. These strikes took place while families were trying to celebrate Eid, a holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, all amidst the chaos of ongoing displacement and destruction.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced that they’ve put forward a counterproposal to Hamas after the group agreed to a ceasefire plan facilitated by Egypt and Qatar. However, the specifics of this counterproposal are still under wraps, which keeps the negotiations in a bit of a gray area.
The bombardment keeps going, even as the international community calls for a truce and the safety of civilians. Aid organizations keep warning about the crumbling infrastructure, the growing hunger crisis, and the lack of access to medical care. Gaza is largely in ruins, with more than 80% of its population displaced and depending on increasingly scarce humanitarian aid.
