The Trump administration is seeking congressional approval for a $6.4 billion arms sale to Israel, including 30 AH-64 Apache attack helicopters and 3,250 infantry assault vehicles, as Israeli forces intensify their offensive in Gaza City. The proposed package, detailed by sources on September 19, 2025, includes $3.8 billion for helicopters, $1.9 billion for troop carriers, and $750 million for support equipment. This move aligns with President Donald Trump’s unwavering support for Israel’s military actions, despite mounting international condemnation of the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.

Expanded Military Operations
Israeli forces have expanded operations in Gaza City, targeting Hamas infrastructure with heavy bombardment and ground assaults. The offensive has displaced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, with many trapped in famine-stricken areas unable to flee due to exhaustion, financial constraints, or Israeli restrictions on movement. Recent strikes killed at least 14 people overnight, including six relatives of Shifa Hospital’s director, Dr. Mohamed Abu Selmiya. The Palestinian Red Crescent reported additional fatalities near Shawa Square, highlighting the relentless violence engulfing civilian areas.

Humanitarian Catastrophe
Gaza’s humanitarian situation remains dire, with the UN declaring famine in Gaza City and aid groups warning of collapsing health systems. UNICEF reported armed theft of therapeutic food from its trucks, intended for malnourished children, though Israel blamed Hamas without evidence. Over 65,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war began, and 90% of the population is displaced. The UN estimates 441 famine-related deaths, including children, as Israel continues to restrict aid access.

US Political Divide
The arms sale proposal underscores a deepening partisan divide in the U.S., where only 32% of Americans support Israel’s military actions, a record low. Democrats, in particular, have grown critical, with 60% disapproving of the Gaza campaign. Meanwhile, Western nations like the UK, France, Canada, and Portugal are moving to recognize Palestinian statehood at the UN General Assembly, isolating the U.S. and Israel diplomatically. Portugal confirmed it would formally recognize Palestine on September 21, 2025, reflecting global frustration with the conflict.
