French President Emmanuel Macron has said that Ukraine must have the authority to decide on foreign peacekeeping forces on its territory. Macron said this in response Britain’s suggestions to send troops as part of a possible ceasefire with Russia. In an interview with French newspapers, Macron said that any such action would require Ukranian approval, and not the approval of Russia.
Russia has always been against NATO troop deployments in Ukraine. Macron stated that any peacekeeping mission might see "a few thousand troops from each country" stationed at key points. However, specifics remain unclear, as Finland’s President Alexander Stubb noted that these plans would need concrete plans. Australia has also expressed interest in peacekeeping operations in Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has somewhat expressed openness to a US proposed 30 day ceasefire, but he has also made it clear that the war will continue until key conditions are met. Over the weekend, cross border airstrikes kept going on.
Macron and Starmer also convened a virtual meeting with non US allies to coordinate their support, trying to maintain unity despite the US shifting priorities.
