New Round of Russia-US Diplomatic Talks to Be Held in Istanbul
Russia and the US are set to hold new diplomatic talks in Istanbul, focusing on technical barriers that hinder daily operations. The talks, led by Aleksandr Darchiev and Sonata Coulter, aim to restore basic embassy functions and reflect a cautious shift toward re-engagement after years of strained relations due to the Ukraine conflict.
Technical Barriers Under Review
Russian officials confirmed that the structure and participants of the upcoming negotiations will mirror those of the previous round. Leading the Russian delegation is Aleksandr Darchiev, Moscow’s newly appointed ambassador to Washington. The United States will be represented by Sonata Coulter, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Eurasian Affairs. Additional representatives from both foreign ministries are expected to attend.
“The work to eliminate numerous technical obstacles that complicate daily diplomatic operations will continue,” the Russian Foreign Ministry told local media, emphasizing the importance of restoring basic embassy functions.
Ongoing Diplomatic Engagement
The renewed engagement was initially announced by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who noted that preparations were already underway via phone and video conferences. These efforts reflect a cautious but notable shift toward diplomatic re-engagement after years of escalating tensions.
Since the deterioration of ties following the Ukraine conflict in 2022, both countries have implemented mutual restrictions, including staff reductions, banking limits, and the seizure of diplomatic properties.
Trump Pushes for Reset in US-Russia Relations
Former US President Donald Trump, who has recently returned to the political spotlight, has called for a reset in US-Russia relations. He has emphasized the need for a swift resolution to the Ukraine conflict and the normalization of bilateral ties—departing from the more confrontational stance of the previous administration.
Earlier meetings between US and Russian officials this year have tackled a variety of issues, including embassy access, financial operations, and the reinstatement of direct air travel. A recent session in Saudi Arabia also produced a tentative agreement to revive the Black Sea Grain Initiative—an arrangement that Trump suggested could lead to a partial rollback of sanctions on Russia.
What’s at Stake
With tensions still high and the Ukraine war ongoing, the Istanbul meeting represents a cautious but meaningful step toward diplomatic normalization. While no breakthroughs are guaranteed, the willingness to meet consistently signals a shared interest in preventing further deterioration of ties.
