Rubio says U.S. May Abandon Ukraine Peace Deal If No Progress Soon
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Friday that President Donald Trump might walk away from a peace deal to end the war in Ukraine if there are no clear signs that an agreement can be reached.
According to Reuters, Rubio stated during a meeting with European and Ukrainian officials in Paris that if it becomes clear in the coming weeks that a deal cannot be reached, the Trump administration will abandon the negotiations.
We're not going to continue with this endeavour for weeks and months on end. So we need to determine very quickly now, and I'm talking about a matter of days, whether or not this is doable in the next few weeks.
Marco Rubio
If it's not possible, if we're so far apart that this is not going to happen, then I think the president is probably at a point where he's going to say, 'well, we're done'.
Marco Rubio
Trump, who originally vowed to end the war within 24 hours of taking office, has since revised his timeline, setting a more realistic goal of achieving a peace agreement by the end of April or May, as challenges to reaching a deal continue to grow. Thus far, all efforts Made by the Trump administration have failed to produce concrete results. However, limited progress was made when Trump’s threats of imposing harsher sanctions on Russia and reducing military aid to Ukraine pressured both sides into attending preliminary talks held in Saudi Arabia.
Rubio also suggested that European nations could play the most crucial role in securing a peace agreement. He emphasized that, in order to reach a viable deal, it may be necessary for the European Union to lift the sanctions it has imposed on Russia.
