Second Round of Russia-US Talks Begins in Istanbul
The second round of formal consultations between the United States and Russia began Thursday morning at 10:00 local time, coinciding with Moscow time, according to reports from TASS. The meeting is taking place at the Russian Consulate General in Istanbul.
Key Figures Leading the Talks
Heading the Russian delegation is Alexander Darchiev, Moscow's Ambassador to the United States. Representing the U.S. side is Sonata Coulter, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs.
The two officials previously led their respective delegations during the first round of consultations on February 27, which were held at the U.S. Consul General’s residence in Istanbul. That meeting reportedly lasted over six hours and was described by the Russian Foreign Ministry as “substantive and businesslike.”
Dialogue Channel Remains Open
Following the initial talks, both sides agreed to maintain the diplomatic channel, emphasizing the importance of continued engagement amid strained bilateral relations.
These consultations mark a rare moment of direct diplomatic contact between Moscow and Washington, focusing on practical issues related to embassy operations, diplomatic staffing, and broader bilateral concerns.
While no official agenda has been released for today’s session, the Istanbul venue has emerged as a neutral ground for dialogue as tensions remain high over the ongoing war in Ukraine and continued sanctions pressure.
