A Russian drone strike targeted a passenger train at a railway station in Shostka, Ukraine’s northern Sumy region, injuring at least 30 people on Saturday.
The attack, which hit a train bound for Kyiv, caused significant damage, with images showing a burning carriage and others with shattered windows.
Ukrainian officials condemned the strike as a deliberate assault on civilians, highlighting Moscow’s intensified campaign against the country’s railway network.
The strike comes amid Russia’s near-daily attacks on Ukraine’s railway system, a vital artery for military and civilian transport.
Regional governor Oleh Hryhorov confirmed the train was en route to the capital when the drone hit, prompting immediate response from medics and rescuers.
Emergency services transported the injured to hospitals, while others at the scene were moved to shelters.
No fatalities were reported, but the attack underscores the growing threat to civilian infrastructure as winter approaches.
Moscow’s airstrikes have also targeted Ukraine’s energy sector, with overnight attacks damaging power facilities in the Chernihiv region, leaving approximately 50,000 households without electricity.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called the Shostka attack a deliberate act of terrorism, emphasizing that such actions demand global attention.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s military reported striking a major Russian oil refinery in retaliation, signaling Kyiv’s intent to counter Moscow’s aggression.
As the war enters its fourth winter, both sides continue to target strategic infrastructure, raising concerns about humanitarian impacts.
