A Ukrainian drone strike killed one civilian and wounded 13 others in Russia’s Tatarstan region early Sunday, regional authorities confirmed. Governor Rustam Minnikhanov reported that while Russian air defenses destroyed the drone, falling debris ignited fires and damaged the Alabuga Special Economic Zone—a critical vehicle manufacturing hub located 1,200 km from the front lines.
Russia’s Defense Ministry stated it intercepted six Ukrainian drones overnight. In response, Russian forces launched 183 drones and decoys alongside 11 missiles toward Ukraine. Ukrainian air defenses reported destroying 111 drones and 8 missiles, while jamming 48 others. The attacks damaged energy and agricultural infrastructure in Poltava but caused no casualties.
Amid renewed offensive operations, Russian troops secured the village of Malynivka in Donetsk Oblast, consolidating control over strategic positions in eastern Ukraine. The Ukrainian military has not publicly addressed the territorial shift.
The violence followed a lengthy phone discussion between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, during which Trump urged a resolution to the conflict. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov noted Putin reiterated Russia’s commitment to protecting its sovereignty while remaining open to dialogue.
In a humanitarian gesture, Russia returned 1,200 bodies of Ukrainian soldiers on Sunday under agreements reached during June 2 peace talks in Istanbul. Russian officials emphasized their compliance with the pact, though Ukraine did not reciprocate with repatriations that day. This exchange remains the sole tangible outcome from recent negotiations.
