The United Nations Security Council is set to convene on Friday evening to address Israel’s recent military strikes on Iran, following a formal request from Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

In a letter to the 15-member body, Araghchi condemned Israel’s actions, stating, “These heinous acts not only constitute a grave violation of Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as a sovereign Member State of the United Nations, but also constitute acts of aggression and war crimes under international law and international humanitarian law, including the Geneva Conventions.”

The meeting comes as tensions escalate, with Iran asserting its right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter.

Iran’s Call for Accountability

Araghchi’s letter emphasized the international community’s responsibility to respond decisively, warning that “failure to respond will only embolden the aggressor, reward impunity, and fuel further chaos in an already fragile region.”

He accused Israel of crossing “all red lines” and declared, “The Islamic Republic of Iran will act with determination to protect its sovereignty, its people, and its national security. This right is non-negotiable.”

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei echoed this stance, cautioning that Israel “must expect severe punishment” for killing top military commanders and nuclear scientists.

Meanwhile, Israel reported intercepting 100 Iranian drones launched in retaliation, signaling a potential for further conflict.

International Reactions and Ongoing Strikes

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that Israel’s military operation, targeting Iranian nuclear facilities and military sites, will continue as long as necessary.

The United States, while not directly involved, saw U.S. President Joe Biden praise the strikes as “excellent,” urging Iran to negotiate its nuclear program.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that the US is not involved in the attacks and warned Iran against targeting American bases.

As the Israeli military continues its barrage, Araghchi urged the UNSC to condemn the aggression, stating, “Israel, the world’s most terrorist regime, has crossed all red lines, and the international community must not allow these crimes to go unpunished.”

The outcome of Friday’s meeting remains pivotal for regional stability.
