The Fuego Volcano in Guatemala experienced a powerful eruption, prompting the urgent evacuation of nearly 300 families from surrounding areas. As volcanic activity continues to intensify, Guatemalan authorities have issued warnings to an estimated 30,000 additional residents, urging them to remain on high alert and prepare for potential evacuation if conditions worsen. The towering volcano, standing at approximately 3,000 meters in height, is considered one of the most active and unpredictable in South America. The eruption, which began overnight, has so far not resulted in any immediate casualties, but officials are closely monitoring the situation as thick plumes of ash, molten lava, and pyroclastic flows pose an increasing threat to nearby communities.

The Last eruption in 2018 killed around 190 people and left 234 missing, resident of El Porvenir Isaac García who evacuated Monday of this week told the Associated Press “We were a little worried because a few years ago the volcano became active,”.

According to Guatemala’s disaster agency, the flow of volcanic material from Fuego Volcano remained weak to moderate on Monday. However, officials have warned that volcanic activity is expected to intensify throughout the week, posing a growing threat to surrounding regions. The country’s capital, Guatemala City, located approximately 53 kilometres from the volcano, could be at risk if the eruption escalates, potentially leading to widespread ashfall and disruptions to daily life. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging residents to stay informed and prepared for possible emergency measures.
