A 38-year-old man died after being attacked by a great white shark near Rottnest Island in Western Australia on Saturday, authorities said.

The incident occurred shortly before 10am local time at Horseshoe Reef, a popular diving and fishing location west of Perth.

Police said the man was brought ashore by boat to Geordie Bay Jetty, where paramedics and officers performed CPR.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said the shark involved was a four-metre-long great white shark.

The victim has not been publicly identified.

Fatal Attack

Western Australia’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development confirmed it had received reports of the shark attack and deployed a patrol vessel to monitor waters around the area.

Authorities also warned visitors to exercise “additional caution” near Horseshoe Reef and Marjorie Bay.

WA Police said a report was being prepared for the Coroner.

Witnesses described emergency crews attempting to revive the victim after he was transported to shore.

“Everyone was watching on as they were doing CPR … it didn’t look too good in the end, which is unfortunate,” witness Jarrad Young told ABC News.

Shark Incidents

The attack marked the first fatal shark incident in Western Australia since March last year, when a surfer was killed at Wharton Beach.

Australia has recorded nearly 1,300 shark attacks since records began in 1791, with more than 260 proving fatal, according to figures cited by local media.

Earlier this year, multiple shark attacks along the New South Wales coast prompted beach closures and heightened public concern.

One of those incidents involved 12-year-old Nico Antic, who died after being attacked by a suspected bull shark in Sydney Harbour.

Australia records an average of around 20 shark attacks annually, most occurring along the country’s eastern and southeastern coastlines.
