Nigeria has launched search-and-rescue operations after a military aircraft carrying 32 people crashed in southwestern Ondo state while flying to Lagos on Monday.

Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo said the wreckage was located near a naval base in the coastal town of Igbokoda after air traffic controllers lost contact with the aircraft.

Authorities have not confirmed casualties, and the condition of those aboard remained unclear as rescue teams continued searching the crash site.

Wreckage Located

The Nigerian Air Force identified the aircraft as an ATR-42 carrying 25 passengers and seven crew members on a routine flight to Lagos.

The aircraft had been traveling from Benin, in Edo state, when communication was lost during the journey.

Keyamo said air traffic controllers lost contact at 09:13 local time, or 0813 GMT, and repeated attempts to reach the aircraft by radio were unsuccessful.

The wreckage was subsequently found near the naval base in Igbokoda, prompting the deployment of rescue personnel to the area.

A video circulating on social media showed people gathered near a river while rescuers searched the area by boat.

One local told the AP news agency that the aircraft had cleared some trees and that body parts, clothing and shoes had been found, though authorities had not independently confirmed casualties.

Rescue Effort Underway

Keyamo said he had spoken with Nigeria's Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and offered the Aviation Ministry's full cooperation and assistance with the rescue operation.

The Nigerian Air Force said an immediate search-and-rescue effort had been launched following the crash.

Officials had not disclosed the extent of damage to the ATR-42 or provided further details about the circumstances that caused it to go down.

With the fate of the 32 people aboard still officially unconfirmed, emergency teams remained focused on the crash site as authorities worked to establish the full circumstances surrounding the accident.
