New York City detectives are investigating the motive behind a deadly shooting on July 28, 2025, at a Midtown Manhattan office tower.
The gunman, Shane Tamura, 27, from Las Vegas, killed four people, including an NYPD officer, before taking his own life.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Tamura, who had a documented history of mental illness, appeared to have acted alone.
The attack occurred at 345 Park Avenue, home to the NFL headquarters, Blackstone, KPMG, and Rudin Management, with no clear reason for the target.
The incident began around 6:30 p.m. when Tamura exited a double-parked BMW, armed with an M4 carbine rifle, and entered the building’s lobby.
He immediately opened fire, killing NYPD officer Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old Bangladeshi immigrant with three and a half years on the force.
Tamura then shot a woman and two men in the lobby, sparing another woman, before taking an elevator to the 33rd floor.
At Rudin Management’s offices, he killed another victim and then fatally shot himself, Tisch reported.
Police found a revolver, ammunition, and prescription medications in his vehicle, along with a Las Vegas-issued concealed carry permit.
Officer Islam, described by Mayor Eric Adams as a “true blue” hero, leaves behind two young sons and a pregnant wife.
Three other victims — two men and a woman — were killed, and another man remains in critical condition.
Four others sustained minor injuries while fleeing the chaos in the busy Midtown area near Grand Central Terminal.
Witnesses reported hearing rapid gunfire, causing panic in Manhattan’s corporate hub.
Investigators are examining Tamura’s cross-country journey and background, which shows no significant criminal history, to understand his actions.
