Pope Francis’ Funeral Set for Saturday: Global Farewell to Pontiff
The funeral of Pope Francis, the first Latin American pope, is scheduled for Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Peter’s Square, the Vatican announced Tuesday.
Francis, aged 88, died on Monday following a stroke and cardiac arrest, triggering a period of mourning and the initiation of traditional rites to transition the Catholic Church to new leadership.
A Transformative Papacy
During his 12-year tenure, Pope Francis led the 1.4-billion-member Church with a focus on social justice, advocating for the poor and marginalized.
His reforms addressed Vatican administrative issues and clergy abuse, though his progressive stances sparked debate among traditionalists. “He gave himself to the end,” said Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, noting Francis’ dedication to inclusivity.
Despite a recent five-week hospitalization for double pneumonia, Francis appeared in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday, delivering a blessing.
His unexpected death has prompted reflection on his legacy and the future direction of the Church.
Funeral Arrangements and Public Viewing
On Wednesday at 9:00 a.m., Francis’ body, placed in a wooden coffin with a zinc lining and dressed in red vestments, will be transferred from the Santa Marta residence — his modest home during his papacy — to St. Peter’s Basilica.
The public may pay respects there until Saturday’s funeral, led by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re.
Attendees will include global leaders such as U.S. President Donald Trump, Argentine President Javier Milei, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Francis’ final testament specified burial at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, a departure from the tradition of interment at St. Peter’s, reflecting his devotion to the site’s Virgin Mary icon.
Conclave and Succession
Preparations for the conclave to elect a new pope are underway, with a start date expected between May 6 and May 11.
Approximately 135 cardinals, most appointed by Francis, will vote in the Sistine Chapel until a two-thirds majority selects a successor, signaled by white smoke.
No leading candidate has yet emerged.
