Spanish footballer Jesús de Miguel has died at the age of 30 after suffering severe injuries in an on-field collision during a second-division match between CD Tenerife and FC Andorra on Monday.
The Tenerife forward was hospitalized following the incident, but his condition deteriorated overnight before the club confirmed his death on Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred in the closing stages of the Segunda División match, with the score tied at 2-2.
De Miguel was pursuing the ball near the halfway line when Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono, an Equatorial Guinea international, rushed out of his penalty area to make a clearance.
The two players collided at speed, leaving De Miguel seriously injured.
Owono received an immediate red card but returned toward the injured player after recognizing the severity of the situation.
De Miguel initially clutched his chest before lying motionless on the field, prompting medical personnel to intervene.
The match was subsequently abandoned as players from both teams watched the emergency response.
Spanish media reported that De Miguel suffered cardiac arrest and was resuscitated before being transported to hospital.
Although initially described as stable, his neurological condition worsened overnight.
Tenerife confirmed De Miguel's death on Tuesday, expressing profound grief and extending condolences to his family, friends and supporters.
FC Andorra also issued a statement mourning the player's death.
Tributes followed from major Spanish clubs, including Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid.
Real Madrid announced plans to observe a minute of silence before training, while Andorra majority shareholder Gerard Piqué also expressed his condolences.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation postponed Tuesday's Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina fixtures as a gesture of respect.
De Miguel joined Tenerife from Castellón in the summer of 2025 after a career spanning several Spanish clubs, including Unionistas de Salamanca.
His former teammate Fernando Román also paid tribute on social media.
