At least three people were killed and several others injured after a knife-wielding attacker carried out a violent rampage in central Taipei, Taiwanese authorities said.

The attack unfolded on Friday evening during the city’s rush hour, beginning at Taipei’s main train station and spreading to nearby transit and shopping areas.

Officials said the suspect later died after falling from a building while being pursued by police, bringing the incident to a swift but deadly end.

Attack Across Transit Areas

Taiwan’s Premier Cho Jung-tai said the suspect first set off smoke bombs at Taipei Main Station before moving toward a nearby subway station in a busy shopping district.

Along the way, the attacker used a long knife to stab members of the public in what authorities described as indiscriminate assaults.

“He deliberately threw smoke bombs and wielded a long knife to carry out indiscriminate attacks on the public,” Cho said.

Images released by Taiwan’s Central News Agency showed smoke bomb canisters at the main station as police examined the scene for evidence.

Local officials said the suspect fled through underground shopping areas and entered nearby buildings as police attempted to intercept him.

Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an said the attacker fell from a building while trying to evade arrest and was later confirmed dead.

Investigation and Security Response

Premier Cho identified the suspect only by his last name, Chang, and said he had a prior criminal record and outstanding warrants.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect’s residence had been searched as part of the investigation.

“We will investigate his background and associated relationships to understand his motives and determine if there are other connected factors,” Cho said.

President William Lai Ching-te said authorities would move quickly to clarify the details of the case and ensure public safety.

In response to the attack, police increased security at transportation hubs and other major locations across Taiwan.

Officials said railway stations, highways, subway systems, and airports were placed on high alert as investigations continued.

Violent crimes of this nature are rare in Taiwan, and the incident has drawn widespread public concern.
