A celebratory Premier League title parade for Liverpool FC turned chaotic on Monday when a car crashed into a crowd of fans, injuring 47 people, including four children.

The incident, which occurred on Water Street in the city center, has left four individuals “very, very ill in hospital,” according to Liverpool City Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram.

Incident Details

The crash took place just after 6 p.m. on a packed street closed to traffic, as fans gathered to see Liverpool’s team parade the Premier League trophy on an open-top bus.

Social media videos captured a grey people-carrier zigzagging through the crowd, striking several people and dragging at least four under its wheels.

Witnesses reported the driver, sounding his horn, reversed and then accelerated forward after entering the restricted area, possibly in a panic as fans began banging on the vehicle.

Merseyside Police said they arrested a “53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area” in connection with the incident.

Authorities have stated it is not being treated as terrorism.

We believe this to be an isolated incident, and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it,said Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Jenny Sims.

Victim and Response Details

Of the 47 injured, 20 were treated at the scene for minor injuries, while 27, including two with serious injuries, were transported to hospitals such as Royal Liverpool and Alder Hey.

Emergency services, including the North West Ambulance Service and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, acted swiftly.

Our crews rapidly lifted the vehicle, removed people from beneath and passed them to our ambulance colleagues,” said MFRS Chief Fire Officer Nick Searle.

Official Reactions

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his dismay, stating, “Scenes of joy turned to utter horror and devastation. My thoughts and the thoughts the whole country are with all of those that are affected.

Mayor Rotheram added, “We are hoping of course that they pull through.”

Ongoing Investigation

Police are urging the public to avoid speculating about the driver’s motives and to refrain from sharing distressing footage.

Liverpool City Council leader Liam Robinson emphasized support for the affected, saying, “We are working closely with Merseyside Police to support their investigation, and with other relevant organizations to make sure those affected get the appropriate support.”

The incident has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a joyous day, with an estimated 1 million people attending the 10-mile parade route, celebrating Liverpool’s first Premier League title since the COVID-era restrictions.
