Massive floods in Pakistan, triggered by intense monsoon rains since late June, have impacted over 6 million people, killed more than 1,000, and displaced 2 million, according to the United Nations and Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority.

The destruction of over 12,500 homes, 6,500 livestock, and vast crop areas has compounded the crisis.

Climate change, with Pakistan among the top 10 most vulnerable nations despite low global emissions, is a key factor, alongside dam releases from India.

The 2022 floods, which submerged a third of the country, caused $30 billion in damages, and this year’s devastation may surpass that.

Health Risks Escalate

Health experts warn of a looming cholera outbreak due to contaminated water and poor sanitation in displacement camps.

Cholera, a bacterial infection causing severe diarrhoea and vomiting, can be fatal without prompt treatment.

Dr Shobha Luxmi emphasized, “Access to clean water, hygiene and nutritional support must be prioritised in relief efforts.”

The British Red Cross highlighted the lack of proper toilets and handwashing facilities in overcrowded shelters, increasing risks of diseases like dysentery.

Amnesty International’s report noted that Pakistan’s underfunded healthcare system struggles to support vulnerable groups like children and the elderly during such climate-driven crises.

Economic Fallout Threatens Recovery

The floods have crippled agriculture and industry, particularly in Punjab and Sindh, Pakistan’s economic powerhouses.

Over 1.8 million acres of farmland, including 50% of rice and 60% of cotton and maize crops, have been destroyed, with losses potentially exceeding $3.53 billion, per the Pakistan Farmers Association.

Iqrar Ahmad Khan, a former university vice chancellor, noted that the scale of crop destruction is unprecedented, threatening wheat sowing critical for food security.

The government’s projected 4.2% economic growth for 2026, supported by a $7 billion IMF bailout, is now at risk as fields and factories remain submerged.
