Uber Expands Into 7 European Markets to Bolster Delivery

U.S. ride-hailing group targets $1bn in bookings amid intensifying competition

Uber is set to expand its food delivery business into seven new European countries this year, widening its presence in a multibillion-euro market marked by intensifying competition and consolidation.

The San Francisco-based company plans to launch services in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Norway, the Czech Republic, Greece and Romania during 2026.

The push is part of a strategy aimed at generating an additional $1 billion in gross bookings over the next three years.

The expansion positions Uber against Finland-based Wolt, owned by U.S. delivery group DoorDash, in several of its established markets.

Susan Anderson, Uber’s global head of delivery, said it was time to "raise the bar, shake things up and deliver better value across the category".

Market Expansion

Uber’s entry into the new countries comes as competition in Europe’s food delivery sector intensifies.

The market has experienced a wave of consolidation, including Prosus’s €4.1 billion deal to take Just Eat Takeaway private and DoorDash’s £2.9 billion acquisition of Deliveroo.

Uber has also moved to strengthen its position in Turkey, agreeing to acquire the food delivery business of Getir from its Emirati-controlling shareholder Mubadala.

Anderson said the transaction would complement Uber’s existing Trendyol Go operations in Turkey and allow the company to consolidate services while applying its global technology platform.

Growing Share

The company’s broader European expansion follows gains in market share in its largest regional markets.

In the United Kingdom, Uber’s share of the food delivery market rose from 28 percent in January 2022 to 38 percent in December last year.

In Germany, its share increased from 10 percent to 26 percent over the same period, according to YipitData.

Anderson attributed the growth in part to Uber’s ability to cross-sell services to customers who already use its ride-hailing platform and to its Uber One membership program.

The company is also investing in automation, including drones and robots for deliveries, as it pursues cost savings and prepares to introduce autonomous ride-hailing vehicles in the UK this year.
