King Charles has initiated a formal process to remove all styles, titles, and honors from his brother, Prince Andrew, amid renewed scrutiny over the prince's association with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Andrew, aged 65, will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.
Buckingham Palace announced the measures on Thursday, stating that formal notice has been served for Andrew to surrender his lease on Royal Lodge and relocate to alternative private accommodation.
The palace specified that King Charles will send royal warrants to remove Andrew's peerage in relation to York, Inverness, and Killyleagh.
Andrew previously held titles including Duke of York, Earl of Inverness, Baron Killyleagh, Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order, and Royal Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.
The stripping has taken effect immediately.
Andrew will move to a property on the privately owned Sandringham estate, funded by King Charles, as soon as practicable.
His ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, who has resided with him at Royal Lodge for the past 20 years, will also depart and make her own arrangements.
Andrew's daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, will retain their titles under rules established by King George V in 1917.
The palace emphasized that these actions are necessary despite Andrew's continued denial of allegations against him, citing serious lapses of judgment.
The decisions follow the release of Virginia Giuffre's posthumous memoir, in which she accused Andrew of sexually assaulting her as a teenager; Giuffre died by suicide in April at age 41.
Andrew paid a reportedly multimillion-dollar settlement to Giuffre in a 2022 civil case.
Public disclosure revealed Andrew paid 1 million pounds for the Royal Lodge lease in 2003 or 2004, with subsequent rent of one peppercorn if demanded annually, plus 7.5 million pounds for refurbishments.
The British government was consulted and supports the moves.
The palace expressed utmost sympathies with victims and survivors of abuse.
Giuffre's family stated that she brought down a British prince with her truth and courage, vowing to pursue accountability for others connected to Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.
