French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Nuuk, Greenland, on June 15, 2025, marking the first visit by a foreign leader since U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to annex the Arctic island.
Invited by Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Macron’s visit underscores France and the European Union’s commitment to supporting Greenland’s autonomy.
The trip, which includes stops at a hydropower station and a glacier, aims to address Arctic security, climate change, and economic development.
Macron emphasized the importance of respecting Greenland’s territorial integrity, stating, “I don’t think that’s something to be done between allies.”
Greenland, a self-governing part of Denmark, has drawn global attention due to its mineral wealth and strategic Arctic location.
Trump’s explicit interest in acquiring the island, including suggestions of military force, has prompted concern from both Greenlandic and Danish leaders, who assert the island is not for sale.
Macron’s presence, described by an adviser as “a signal in itself,” reinforces Europe’s stance against external claims on Greenland.
The visit also builds on Denmark’s recent defense cooperation with France, including orders for French-made missiles, reflecting a broader European alignment to counter U.S. pressures.
Beyond security, Macron’s agenda includes discussions on enhancing Greenland’s partnership with the EU, despite its non-membership in the bloc.
Focus areas include low-carbon energy and critical minerals, vital for economic development and climate goals. Greenland’s Prime Minister Nielsen expressed gratitude for France’s support, noting on social media, “France has stood by us since the first statements about taking our land emerged.”
An IFOP poll revealed strong public opposition to U.S. annexation, with 77% of French and 56% of Americans disapproving. Macron’s visit, en route to a G7 summit in Canada, underscores Europe’s resolve to protect Greenland’s sovereignty and foster sustainable development.
