In a tragic incident in Mannheim, Germany, a car deliberately drove into pedestrians, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to several others. Police reported that the attack occurred in the city center during carnival celebrations. The suspect, a 40-year-old German man from the nearby Rhineland-Palatinate, has since been arrested and is receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the event.

Witnesses described chaos as a black Ford Fiesta sped into the crowd, with people screaming and lying on the ground. Among the deceased are an 83-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man. Authorities indicated that five individuals suffered serious injuries, while several others sustained minor injuries. All victims have been taken to local hospitals for urgent medical care.

Thomas Strobl, the interior minister of Baden-Württemberg, stated that investigators believe the suspect acted alone. Early reports suggest that mental health issues may have played a role in the attack, and authorities have ruled out any political motives. The driver, who has a history of previous convictions including drunk driving and hate speech, faces charges of murder and attempted murder.

The incident adds to a concerning trend of car ramming attacks in Germany, raising concerns about public safety. Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union, expressed his shock and emphasized the need for Germany to become a safer place.
