British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is weighing his political future amid growing pressure from within the Labour Party following Andy Burnham’s decisive victory in the Makerfield by-election.

Reports in British media suggest Starmer is considering whether to announce a timetable for his departure within days, as senior Labour figures increasingly call for a leadership transition.

The pressure follows months of declining popularity, electoral setbacks and internal dissatisfaction that have weakened Starmer’s position despite Labour’s large parliamentary majority.

If he resigns, the United Kingdom would see its seventh prime minister in a decade.

Leadership Pressure

Burnham’s victory in Makerfield has intensified scrutiny of Starmer’s leadership and strengthened calls for change within Labour.

The Greater Manchester mayor secured a comfortable win in the constituency and significantly increased Labour’s majority, reversing a recent pattern of electoral setbacks for the party.

His success has cleared a potential path to challenge for the Labour leadership and ultimately become prime minister if Labour lawmakers and members back him.

In his victory speech, Burnham described the result as Labour’s “final chance to change”.

Several senior ministers, including Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, are reported to have urged Starmer to outline an exit timetable.

Scores of Labour MPs have also publicly called for either his resignation or a structured transition process.

Future Uncertain

Business Secretary Peter Kyle said Starmer was reflecting on the political situation following what he described as a frank discussion with the prime minister.

Kyle said Starmer was considering the “political realities” facing both his leadership and the government.

While Starmer has previously insisted he would contest any attempt to remove him, recent comments from allies suggest a shift in tone as discussions continue behind the scenes.

Media reports indicate the prime minister spent the weekend holding talks with advisers and political allies.

Burnham is expected to return to Westminster on Monday to formally take up his parliamentary seat.

The leadership debate comes amid concerns within Labour that a prolonged contest could create political uncertainty and distract from government priorities.

At the same time, supporters of Burnham argue the by-election result demonstrated strong public backing for a new direction for the party.
