Jordanian security forces arrested three armed suspects on Monday following a prolonged shootout in Karak governorate, days after gunmen attacked a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church, killing at least eight people and wounding 40 others.

State media reported that all three suspects were injured during the confrontation before being taken into custody.

The arrests followed an intensive search for those responsible for Friday's attack, although authorities have not identified any suspected militant affiliation.

Suspects Captured After Shootout

Jordan's Public Security Directorate said security personnel located the suspects hiding inside an abandoned house in Al-Jadeeda village in Karak on Monday.

According to authorities, the suspects refused orders to surrender and opened fire on security forces, prompting officers to return fire.

The confrontation lasted approximately three hours, according to a government source cited by Al Jazeera.

All three suspects sustained serious injuries, with one reportedly in critical condition.

No security personnel were injured during the operation.

Authorities recovered firearms and live ammunition from the property, according to the Petra News Agency.

Government Communication Minister Mohammad Momani praised the joint security operation and confirmed that the suspects had been wounded and arrested.

Authorities have described the attackers as extremist terrorists, although no organization has claimed responsibility.

The suspects' identities and possible affiliations have not been publicly disclosed.

Church Attack Prompts Security Review

Friday's shooting occurred during a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church in Hamoud village, approximately 120 kilometers southwest of Amman.

Witnesses said the gunfire continued for several minutes.

Initial figures cited by Jordan's Health Ministry reported eight fatalities, while Reuters subsequently reported nine deaths.

Both accounts recorded 40 people injured.

As of Monday, 27 victims remained hospitalized, including one patient in critical condition following surgery.

King Abdullah II condemned the attack, promised severe punishment for those responsible and ordered a review of security response procedures.

Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya said authorities were examining factors contributing to youth radicalization and would pursue accountability for anyone involved.

The violence has heightened concerns over security in Karak, home to a substantial portion of Jordan's Christian minority.
