Mike Waltz Leaves Position As National Security Advisor
National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, his deputy Alex Wong, and several other members of the National Security Council (NSC) have been removed from their positions, Fox News confirmed Thursday.
Waltz had faced mounting criticism since it was revealed last month that he initiated an unsecured group chat on the messaging app Signal to discuss U.S. military plans for a potential bombing campaign in Yemen—a scandal now widely referred to as “Signal-gate.” The controversy implicated several members of the Trump administration, including Vice President J.D. Vance.
The group chat was reportedly created by Deputy National Security Advisor Alex Wong, who allegedly added The Atlantic reporter Jeffrey Goldberg to the conversation by mistake, inadvertently exposing the sensitive discussions.
Although President Trump initially stood by Waltz, the dismissals signal a broader shake-up at the NSC and come amid growing internal divisions over the administration's foreign policy direction. Earlier Thursday, it was reported that the fourth round of indirect U.S.-Iran negotiations had been canceled, alongside planned talks between Iran and European powers Germany, France, and the United Kingdom.
Waltz, known for his hawkish stance on both Russia and Iran, was reportedly one of the few voices in the White House still advocating for direct military action against Tehran.
