Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed support for Syria’s efforts to restore stability following a surge in violence, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. In a letter to Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, Putin emphasized Russia’s commitment to Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, regardless of the administration which is in power.

Peskov stated that Putin reaffirmed Russia’s stance on preserving Syria’s independence, unity, and stability. He also highlighted Moscow’s continued cooperation with Damascus, aiming to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations, while simultaneously condemning what Russia calls 'barbaric extremism' carrier out by elements of the new government.

Escalation of Violence in Syria

The recent unrest in Syria has been concentrated along the Mediterranean coast, particularly in the provinces of Latakia and Tartus. Clashes between the newly established HTS-led security forces and armed Alawite insurgents have led to significant casualties, including many civilians.

Reports indicate that over 1,500 civilians have lost their lives, with graphic footage circulating online purportedly showing shocking human rights violations. The United Nations Security Council convened a closed session on March 10 to discuss the escalating crisis. Both Russia and the United States have condemned the reported mass killings of civilians perpetrated by Syria's new HTS-led government. Syria's President Ahmad Al-Sharaa denied this, attributing the killings to 'undisciplined groups', and has opened an official investigation into the cause of the transgressions.

Syria’s Transitional Government Responds

Following the violence, Syria’s transitional government declared the conclusion of its military operation in the affected regions. Authorities attributed the unrest to 'supporters of the previous regime', and announced plans to take further action against them.

Syria has been in political turmoil since late 2024, when opposition forces launched a rapid offensive, capturing Damascus and dismantling the previous administration. Although former President Assad was granted asylum in Russia, Moscow continues to maintain a presence in Syria, operating from Khmeimim Airbase and the Tartus naval facility.

Russia’s Role in Syria’s Future

Despite the leadership change, Russia remains actively involved in Syria’s security and reconstruction efforts. Moscow continues to advocate for stability while engaging with the transitional government on political and economic matters. As the international community closely monitors developments, Syria’s future remains uncertain, with ongoing concerns about security, governance, and humanitarian conditions.
