FDA Vaccine Chief Resigns, Criticizes Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s Leadership

Dr. Peter Marks, the top vaccine official at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has resigned, citing concerns about the leadership of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. In his resignation letter, Marks indicated he faced a choice to resign or be dismissed, expressing that he felt scientific transparency was being compromised.

Marks has played an important role in vaccine regulation and the development of COVID-19 vaccines during Operation Warp Speed. He criticized Kennedy for what he viewed as an emphasis on misinformation rather than factual accuracy. He also pointed to the ongoing measles outbreak in Texas, which has reported over 400 cases and resulted in two fatalities, as a significant public health issue.

The resignation occurs amid ongoing public health discussions, with some experts expressing concern over Kennedy’s views on vaccine safety. Marks noted recent actions, such as the cancellation of an independent vaccine advisory committee meeting, as indicative of changes in the agency's approach to vaccine policy.

In response to Marks' resignation, an official from the HHS stated that individuals not aligned with the agency's mission of promoting scientific integrity may not be suited for their roles.

Marks has served as the director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research since 2016 and expressed hope that efforts to uphold scientific integrity would continue, allowing for the advancement of public health initiatives.
