A mass shooting at a crowded bar on St. Helena Island, South Carolina, left four people dead and at least 20 injured early Sunday morning.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office responded to multiple reports of gunfire at Willie’s Bar and Grill just before 1 a.m.

Deputies arrived to find a large crowd, with several individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.

Hundreds of people were present at the bar when the shooting erupted.

Victims and witnesses fled to nearby businesses and homes to seek shelter from the gunfire.

Four individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.

Four others were taken to local hospitals in critical condition.

At least 20 people sustained injuries in the incident.

Several victims sought medical treatment independently at nearby hospitals.

The sheriff’s office has not released the victims’ names, pending notification of next of kin.

Investigation Underway

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the circumstances of the shooting.

Authorities are pursuing persons of interest in connection with the incident.

They are urging anyone with information to contact the sheriff’s office.

Photos from the scene showed a significant police presence outside the bar.

The sheriff’s office described the event as a tragic and difficult incident for all involved.

Willie’s Bar and Grill is known for serving authentic Gullah cuisine.

St. Helena Island is a cultural hub for the Gullah Geechee community, descendants of enslaved Africans.

An estimated 5,000 or more Gullah residents live on the island, preserving unique traditions.

These include a distinct dialect, cast-net fishing, and basket weaving, shaped by the island’s isolation.

Community and Context

U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace expressed devastation over the shooting.

“COMPLETELY HEARTBROKEN to learn about the devastating shooting in Beaufort County,” she posted on X.

“Our prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this horrific act of violence,” she added.

This tragedy follows a wave of gun violence in Mississippi over the weekend, leaving nine dead.

Mass shootings, defined as incidents with four or more people shot, have risen in the U.S. over the past decade.

Political divides persist, with Democrats pushing for gun restrictions and Republicans advocating for gun rights and stronger law enforcement.
