An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and injured a man during an operation in New York City's Marble Hill neighbourhood on Thursday, with a five-year-old child reportedly inside his vehicle.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said preliminary reports indicated agents surrounded the car before firing multiple rounds.

The child was believed to be physically unharmed, while the man remained conscious and was receiving hospital treatment.

Federal Operation Under Investigation

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said officers were conducting a targeted enforcement operation at approximately 4pm to arrest a Dominican national with a criminal conviction.

According to DHS, the unnamed man had previously been convicted of grand larceny and arrested on allegations involving assault, robbery, drugs and weapons.

The department also alleged links to the Trinitarios criminal group and said New York police had arrested him in December 2023 before releasing him days later.

DHS confirmed an officer discharged his weapon but provided no further explanation of the shooting.

The incident remains under investigation.

Mamdani condemned the shooting and said he would demand that President Donald Trump end ICE enforcement operations in New York City.

Governor Kathy Hochul also contacted Trump, expressing outrage and requesting the public release of body-camera footage to establish the circumstances.

Trump had not publicly commented on the incident.

Protesters gathered near the scene Thursday evening, demanding justice and an end to ICE operations.

Growing Immigration Enforcement Scrutiny

The shooting adds to mounting criticism of federal immigration enforcement following deadly incidents in Minneapolis earlier this year.

In January, federal immigration agents fatally shot Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, and Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse.

Good's killing prompted widespread demonstrations, while federal authorities excluded local officials from the investigation and rejected calls for a civil rights inquiry.

Additional deployments brought federal personnel in Minnesota to approximately 3,000 as protests spread nationwide.

The Trump administration has defended its immigration crackdown, with ICE pursuing an annual deportation target of one million people.

The agency has expanded beyond 22,000 agents, backed by approximately $75 billion in funding over four years.
