The fatal shooting of a Minneapolis activist by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer has prompted nationwide protests and multiple investigations, intensifying tensions between federal authorities and local officials.

Civil liberties and migrant-rights groups said more than 1,000 rallies and vigils were planned across the United States over the weekend in response to the killing and recent federal enforcement actions.

Nationwide Protests

Minneapolis became a focal point of demonstrations after a 37-year-old mother of three, Renee Good, was shot and killed while seated in her vehicle on a residential street.

The shooting occurred days after roughly 2,000 federal officers were deployed to the city in what the Department of Homeland Security described as its largest operation to date.

Protest organizers said the demonstrations, held under the banner “ICE Out For Good,” were aimed at opposing large-scale immigration enforcement deployments ordered by President Donald Trump.

On Friday night, demonstrators staged a noisy protest outside a Minneapolis hotel believed to be housing ICE agents, drawing a police response that resulted in at least 30 people being detained, cited, and released.

Similar protests emerged in cities including Portland, Oregon, New York, Oakland, and Kansas City, as organizers reported growing participation nationwide.

Conflicting Accounts

Federal officials said Good had been impeding and stalking ICE agents and claimed the officer fired in self-defense after she attempted to ram him with her vehicle.

Local officials and civil liberties advocates disputed that account, citing bystander and body camera footage.

Video from the scene shows masked officers approaching Good’s vehicle as it was stopped at an angle, partially blocking traffic.

An officer is seen grabbing the driver-side door handle as the vehicle moves forward, followed by three shots fired into the car.

Footage recorded by the officer shows Good appearing calm and saying, “That's fine, dude, I'm not mad at you,” moments before the shooting.

Authorities said it remains unclear whether the vehicle made contact with the officer.

Minnesota and Hennepin County officials announced a separate criminal investigation alongside a federal inquiry led by the FBI.

The incident has heightened federal-state tensions, with additional scrutiny following a separate ICE-related shooting in Portland that wounded two people.
