Kamala Harris Weighs California Governor Run

Kamala Harris Weighs Run for California Governor in 2026, Sets Decision Deadline

Former Vice President Kamala Harris is seriously considering a run for governor of California in 2026 and has set a deadline to decide by the end of this summer, according to sources familiar with her plans. The move comes as current California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has held office since 2019, faces term limits and will be unable to seek re-election. The race to replace him is expected to attract a crowded field, but Harris’ potential entry could reshape the contest and deter other prominent Democrats from launching their own campaigns.

Harris’ Potential Candidacy Could Reshape the Race

At a pre-Oscars party last weekend, Harris was asked by an attendee about her timeline for deciding whether to enter the gubernatorial race. According to two individuals with knowledge of the conversation, she indicated she would make a decision by the end of the summer. While Harris has not yet held formal discussions about a run, her potential candidacy is already influencing the political landscape.

Former Democratic Congresswoman Katie Porter, who has been closely monitoring the race, has signaled that she would not challenge Harris in the state’s primary. California’s unique primary system allows the top two candidates, regardless of party affiliation, to advance to the general election. Similarly, Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, a close ally of Harris who shares some of the same top consultants, is expected to step aside if Harris enters the race and could instead pursue another statewide office.

Other prominent California Democrats, including former state Senate leader Toni Atkins, former state Controller Betty Yee, and state schools Superintendent Tony Thurmond, have long supported Harris and are unlikely to compete against her. However, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has suggested he will remain in the race, though even those close to him have expressed doubts about his plans.

In recent weeks, Harris has reportedly reached out to supporters, allies, and trusted aides, making clear her intention to decide on a gubernatorial bid within the coming months. Her decision could significantly impact the dynamics of the 2026 election, as her high profile and extensive political network would make her a formidable contender in the race to lead the nation’s most populous state.
