United States President Donald Trump has removed Attorney General Pam Bondi from her post, a White House official confirmed on Thursday, following mounting frustration with her performance, particularly regarding the handling of investigative files tied to the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In a social media post, Trump praised Bondi as a “Great American patriot and a loyal friend” while announcing her transition to the private sector. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, Trump’s former personal attorney, will serve as acting head of the Justice Department in the interim. The dismissal, which occurred during an Oval Office meeting on April 1, marks the second firing of a cabinet secretary in a month, following the ouster of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on March 5.

Epstein Files Controversy Dominates Tenure

Bondi’s tenure was overshadowed by repeated criticism over the Justice Department’s release of records related to its sex trafficking investigation into Epstein, a financier who maintained ties with numerous wealthy and powerful figures. The controversy created persistent political headaches for the Trump administration and drew renewed scrutiny of the president’s past friendship with Epstein, which Trump has claimed ended decades ago. After an initial release of material that was largely already public, the DOJ and FBI declared in July that the case was closed and no further disclosures were warranted. The move sparked an eruption of criticism from both Democrats and Republicans, leading to the passage of a bipartisan law in November requiring the department to release nearly all of its files. Even after the release of roughly three million pages of records, the controversy persisted, with lawmakers criticizing redactions and the accidental disclosure of the identities of some Epstein victims. Bondi, who had earlier promised transparency and claimed an Epstein client list was on her desk for review, faced accusations of covering up or mismanaging the records.

Lawmakers Demand Accountability

Bondi’s ouster has not quelled the political firestorm. Representative Robert Garcia, a California Democrat and ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, stated that Bondi and Trump “may think her firing gets her out of testifying to the Oversight Committee. They are wrong – and we look forward to hearing from her under oath”. The committee had previously subpoenaed Bondi, and she was scheduled to testify on April 14. Bondi also faced sharp criticism for her combative demeanor during a House Judiciary Committee hearing in February, where she refused to apologize to Epstein victims and their relatives and engaged in political attacks directed at lawmakers.
