Trump Intensifies Pressure on Rep. Massie Over Government Funding Bill
President Donald Trump is ramping up pressure on Representative Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) to vote in favor of the GOP’s short-term government funding bill ahead of a looming deadline. In a post on Truth Social, Trump criticized Massie, labeling him a “grandstander” and asserting that he should face a primary challenge in the upcoming midterm elections. Trump’s remarks come after Massie reiterated his commitment to oppose the bill, which he claims perpetuates “waste, fraud, and abuse.”
Trump’s criticism of Massie echoes past tensions, recalling a similar confrontation during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic when Massie compelled House members to vote in person. At that time, Trump branded him a “third-rate grandstander.” Now, Trump’s comments hint at a desire to consolidate support among Republicans and ensure party unity, especially as the House holds a narrow majority.
Notably, Massie is recognized for his independence from traditional party funding sources, including the Israeli lobby group AIPAC, which has often influenced congressional votes on foreign aid and defense issues. This independence aligns with his broader fiscal conservatism and commitment to limited government.
During a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized the importance of Republican unity in supporting the funding bill, urging all members of Congress to act in the public interest to prevent a government shutdown. Massie, however, remains resolute in his stance, dismissing Trump’s threats as ineffective. He stated, “Guess what? Doesn’t work on me,” highlighting his past electoral successes despite similar challenges.
