Trump Stirs Controversy With Talk of Potential Third Presidential Term
US President Donald Trump has stirred up controversy by saying that he might look into ways to pursue a third term in office, even though the 22nd Amendment limits presidents to two terms. In a recent talk with NBC News, Trump mentioned that “there are methods” to get around this rule, adding, “a lot of people want me to do it,” but he also said that it’s “too early” to make any decisions.
When asked about possible strategies, Trump brought up Vice President JD Vance running for office and the idea of transferring power, but he didn’t go into detail about any other options. Altering the constitutional term limit would need the backing of at least two thirds of Congress or state legislatures, plus ratification from three quarters of the states which is a situation that seems unlikely.
Trump talked about his solid poll numbers, using it as a justification, saying that public support could propel such initiatives. Allies like Steve Bannon have fueled the speculation, predicting that Trump will “run and win again in 2028.” The White House added to the conversation by posting a manipulated magazine cover on social media, showing Trump wearing a crown with the caption, “LONG LIVE THE KING!”
