One person was killed during an encounter involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Biddeford, Maine, on Monday, according to state officials, as authorities launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Maine House Speaker Ryan Fecteau said on social media that "A person was killed. ICE was involved," while adding that state police were at the scene.
The FBI said it responded immediately to assist, and local police described the case as an active investigation.
ICE and the Department of Homeland Security did not immediately comment.
Details surrounding the shooting remained limited as officials sought to establish what occurred.
U.S. Senator Angus King said he had spoken with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and was told the victim was a man in his 20s.
King also said the agents were apparently not wearing body cameras and called for "a full, transparent and open investigation of this matter."
Senator Susan Collins similarly said the shooting "requires a full and impartial investigation of what happened."
Governor Janet Mills said she had been briefed on the incident, describing the situation as "frightening and alarming."
Immigration advocates identified the victim as a 26-year-old Colombian man who was authorized to work in the United States, though officials did not publicly confirm his identity.
The Maine Immigrants' Rights Coalition and Presente! Maine called for a transparent account of the incident and expressed condolences to the victim's family.
Witnesses described a confrontation involving an unmarked white SUV and a white sedan before gunfire erupted.
Daniel Boucher said he saw the SUV strike the smaller vehicle several times before an ICE officer pulled a man from the car.
He said the man stated, "But I tried to stop," before appearing to lose consciousness.
Boucher also said the officer involved appeared distressed after the shooting and stated the man had tried to ram or hit him.
Separately verified video showed a white car moving in circles while men wearing vests attempted to stop it.
Photos from the scene showed what appeared to be bullet holes in the windshield of the car.
The incident comes days after another fatal encounter involving a U.S. immigration agent during a traffic stop in Texas and has prompted protests in Biddeford as federal investigators continue examining the case.
